Board of Directors Resume:

Dr. Silverstone has significant Board experience including Chair positions while volunteering at several not-for-profit boards, and is a certified Board Director by the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD.D). He has also been on the board of some small start-up companies in the health area. Working on novel strategic directions has been a key passion during these experiences.

Board Training in Corporate Governance

Directors Education Program by the Institute of Corporate Directors – Accredited Trained Director – Institute Corporate Directors (ICD.D) in 2010.

This is an intensive program offered by the Institute of Corporate Directors in partnership with the Alberta School of Business and the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. Completion of this program, and passing the examination, leads to accredited training for board directors.


Directors Financial Literacy Program, Institute of Corporate Directors

This program is for board directors who do not have accredited accounting designations, but who want to further expand their detailed knowledge of all financial accounting by companies. It utilizes a case-based style of learning and is based on extensive reviews of several public companies.


Brown Governance training

As part of membership of one board there was significant training and education regarding all aspects of board governance issues over a 6-month period. Training included including one-on-one interactions and peer feedback.


Institute of Corporate Directors

I have attended multiple brief training and other events run by the Institute of Corporate Directors.


Not-for-profit Board Appointments

Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC). Chair and Board Director –2008 –2014.

At the time I was on the board EEDC was a major corporation with over 800 employees and annual revenue of around $35 million. Its role was to guide and assist the City of Edmonton in a variety of areas involving economic development. I was a board member for the full 6-year term, of which 2 years were spent as Chair of the Board and 2 years as Vice-Chair. I was also Chair of the Governance and Compensation Committees, as well as serving on other board subcommittees.


Citadel Theatre. Board Director for 2 years

The Citadel Theatre celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015. It has an international reputation for the quality and originality of its productions. During my time on the board it was undergoing significant strategic challenges, and I was actively involved as a board member to help create the conditions for another successful 50 years including the appointments of a new Artistic Director and Executive Director.


Little Warriors. Vice-Chair and Board Director –2011 –2014

Little warriors is a charity devoted to helping to minimize the risk of child sexual abuse within the community as well as to developing a secure environment for victims of child sexual abuse. It works with large and small organizations to raise awareness of this issue. I was actively involved in ensuring the programs run by this charity involve the best scientific evidence.


Northlands. Board Director for 2 years.

Northlands was a unique agricultural organization founded over 130 years ago. At the time of his joining the board it had an annual budget of over $100 million and ran many major events including hosting the Edmonton Oilers. He was involved in exploring the associated strategic challenges involved with this changing.


Chairman, Blankets of Love Foundation for Mental Health

I was Chair of this charitable organization for over 5 years, 2004-2010. The goal of this charitable organization was to provide support for inpatients in psychiatric hospital beds across the country. I supported the charity to grow and develop, and dealt with all aspects typical of new charities, including fund-raising, sustainability, etc.
